Automatically applying “Buy X Get Y” discounts with a free gift in Customer Portal
Cleverific's Customer Portal supports Shopify’s automatic Buy X Get Y discounts, where a customer spends a minimum amount and receives a free gift item.
For example:
“Buy $20 from the Collection, get a free gift.”
Maximum one use per order.

How the Buy X Get Y (Free Gift) discount works in Customer Portal
You can find below the expected behavior for different scenarios and edits made in Customer Portal.
| Scenario | What happens |
|---|---|
| Order total stays above the discount threshold (e.g., still over $20 from the eligible collection) | The free gift remains in the order. |
| Order total drops below the discount threshold | The free gift is automatically removed. |
| Only the free item remains after edits | The order is automatically cancelled to prevent misuse. (By default, the free item is restocked.) |
| Customer increases the order value above the threshold | Only one free gift is applied per order. Additional free gifts are not added, based on the maximum one use per order. |
| Order includes other combined discounts (product, order, or shipping) | The Buy X Get Y discount works alongside other applicable discounts. By default, Shopify gives priority to the Buy X Get Y discount over any product-specific discounts. |
| Free gift is out of stock and “Continue selling when out of stock” is disabled for this item | Cleverific will not add the free gift and will complete the edit without error. |
| Discount is scheduled for a future date | The free gift won’t apply until the discount becomes active in Shopify. |
Setup
Grant permissions
To authorize Cleverific to read your discounts' setup, you need to grant permissions to do so. You can click the Grant Permissions button in your Customer Portal settings, under the BXGY Discounts section:

Clear cache
Cleverific caches Shopify’s Buy X Get Y discounts, and this cache automatically refreshes once per hour. If you make changes to a discount in Shopify (for example, swapping products or updating settings), those updates might not appear immediately in Cleverific. If you’d like the changes to apply right away, you can clear the cache by clicking the Clear Cache button in your Customer Portal settings, under the BXGY Discounts section:

Key limitations
Only one product can be added as the free gift in your automatic Buy X Get Y (free gift) discount (”Customer gets”). This product must be either a specific variant or a product without variants. It can’t be a collection or include multiple variants of the same product.
