Order number suffixing and sequencing

By default, when you edit an order in Advanced Mode, Cleverific appends a suffix to the order number for the new version to indicate that this is the latest version of the order. For example, if you edit Order #1001, Cleverific will create Order #1001A with your updates. Because of the way Shopify works under the hood, this can give the impression that orders are not being created sequentially. This article will explain how it works.

How order sequencing works

When Cleverific adds a suffix to an order number after saving your edits in Advanced Mode, Shopify still increments its internal counter under the hood, causing the next order placed on your store to have "skipped" a number.

Example

When you edit order #1001 in Cleverific's Advanced Mode, the edited version, order #1001A, uses the order number slot that "would have been" Order #1002.

The next order placed by your customer will get assigned order #1003.

Because of Shopify's internal counter, you'll see the following order number sequence in your order list:

#1001

#1001A

#1003

This gives the impression that number #1002 has been "skipped" or is "missing". However, under the hood, #1001A is taking up order #1002's slot.

In this example, #1891A is taking up order #1892's slot.

This is normal behavior, and while we can't prevent Shopify from incrementing their internal counter, this does not represent any missing orders.
